Essay on Pollution

Pollution

Environmental pollution refers to the introduction of harmful pollutants into the environment. The major types of environmental pollution are air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, thermal pollution, soil pollution and light pollution.
Deforestation and hazardous gaseous emissions also leads to environmental pollution. During the last 10 years, the world has witnessed severe rise in environmental pollution.

We all live on planet earth, which is the only planet known to have an environment, where air and water are two basic things that sustain life. Without air and water the earth would be like the other planets – no man, no animals, no plants. The biosphere in which living beings have their sustenance has oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon and water vapor. All these are well balanced to ensure and help a healthy growth of life in the animal world. This balance does not only help the life-cycles of animals and plants, but it also creates the perennial sources of minerals and energies without which the human civilization of to-day could not be built. It is for this balance that the human life and other forms of existence have flourished on earth for so many thousands of years.
But man, as the most intelligent animal, never stopped being inquisitive, nor was he content with the bounties of nature. His quest for knowledge and search for security succeeded in exploring newer and wider avenues of mysteries that remained baffling so long. Man’s excursions into the darkest regions of mysteries laid foundations for the stupendous civilization, for the conquests of men had ensured their domination in their world and gave them a key to control all the forces in nature.
With the dawn of the age of science and technology, there has been huge growth and development of human potentials. And, it is here that man first began losing control and became prisoner of his own creations.

Sources and Causes

The sources and causes of environmental pollution includes the following:
  • Industrial activities: The industries all over the world that brought prosperity and affluence, made inroads in the biosphere and disturbed the ecological balances. The pall of smoke, the swirling gases, industrial effluents and the fall-out of scientific experiments became constant health hazards, polluting and contaminating both air and water. The improper disposal of industrial wastes are the sources of soil and water pollution.
  • Vehicles: The smoke emitted by vehicles using petrol and diesel and the cooking coal also pollutes the environment. The multiplication of vehicles, emitting black smoke that, being free and unfettered, spreads out and mixes with the air we breathe. The harmful smoke of these vehicles causes air pollution. Further, the sounds produced by these vehicles produces causes noise-pollution.
  • Rapid urbanization and industrialization: The urbanization and the rapid growth of industrialization are causing through environmental pollution the greatest harm to the plant life, which in turn causing harm to the animal kingdom and the human lives.
  • Population overgrowth: Due to the increase in population, particularly in developing countries, there has been surge in demand for basic food, occupation and shelter. The world has witnessed massive deforestation to expand absorb the growing population and their demands.

Effect

Environmental pollution has negatively affected the life of both human-beings and animals. Almost all of our gains in the fields of industrial progress, science and technology had so far been realized at the cost of our health. Even our flora and fauna were found to be threatened with extinction.
All this really leaves us wondering if all our achievements and industrial civilization really help us climb the peaks of prosperity or simply take us down the blind alleys of adversity. It is not only in India, but all over the world – even in Europe and U.S.A. – that the question is being raised whether all is well with our industrial growth and progress in the field of science and technology. Many crusaders against environmental pollution are vehemently protesting against the indiscriminate violations committed daily in the name of development.
The environmental pollution is not caused by the fall-out from nuclear tests or industries alone. The smoke left behind the automobiles and other vehicular traffic, the increasing use of synthetic detergents, nitrogen fertilizers and insecticides contaminate both air and water.
  • The water we drink the vegetables are all contaminated to-day. As a result of this contamination our world is afflicted with a quite a number of incurable diseases.
  • Nothing in this world is immune, no life is safe and the future of this world is bleak.
  • The factories are mostly built in populated areas and the smoke-emitting vehicles ply through the congested areas. Besides causing immense disturbances, there are increasing case of pulmonary tuberculosis and thrombosis and various sorts of brain and heart complications.
  • Air-pollution may cause severe lungs-diseases, asthma, brain-disorder diseases, etc.
  • Soil-pollution may have negative effect on farm output ratio. It can also contaminate the ground water.
  • Noise-pollution have negative effects on hearing or auditory sense organs. It can also cause deafness, tiredness, and mental losses.
  • The heat generated by industries and vehicles causes thermal pollution by raising the environmental temperature of the nearby areas.
The birth of mills and factories is the result of the growth of industry in this machine-predominated age. As long as they will be there, they must emit smoke, pollute the air and hasten our end by slow-poisoning.
The worst industrial environment tragedy occurred at Bhopal on December 3, 1984 as a result of toxic and poisonous leakage of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas from a multi-national Union Carbide pesticides manufacturing plant. Over 2000 people including woman and children were killed, and hundreds were severely hurt.

Solution

What then is the remedy? There surely cannot be any radical solution, for the existing factories cannot be bodily lifted to a place far from the populated zone. However, the following attempts can be made to solve the problem of environmental pollution.
  • The Government can at least see that future factories are set up at a distant place, an industrial complex far away from the township.
  • Researcher may find out how to avoid harmful smoke from running vehicles.
  • Deforestation should be stopped and Forestry should be developed.
  • Discharge of Factory wastes in rivers should be banned so as to make the river-water free from pollution.

Initiatives

  1. The UN Conference on Human Environment was convened to study the profound changes in the relationship between man and his environment in the wake of modern scientific and technological developments.
  2. The World Health Organization also set up an international network for the monitoring and study of air pollution on a global scale and for devising possible remedies.

Conclusion

We can very well notice the abnormal behaviour of the seasons – the cycle developing clogs in its wheels; and the worried experts fear that the disturbed balance in the biosphere has assumed such serious proportion that very soon our world would be uninhabitable like Hiroshima of 1945. But it is heartening to find the entire world aware of the menace. Some of the advanced countries have already taken some measures to meet it. If we fail to restore the ecological balance right now, it would be too late tomorrow.

14 tips by Bill Gates

              14 Tips(Rules)  by Bill Gates

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Rule No. 12:   Smoking does not make you look cool. It makes you look moronic. Next time you're out cruising, watch an 11-year-old with a butt in his mouth. That's what you look like to anyone over 20. Ditto for "expressing yourself" with purple hair and/or pierced body parts.

Rule No. 13:   You are not immortal. (See Rule No. 12.) If you are under the impression that living fast, dying young and leaving a beautiful corpse is romantic, you obviously haven't seen one of your peers at room temperature lately.

Rule No. 14:   Enjoy this while you can. Sure parents are a pain, school's a bother, and life is depressing. But someday you'll realize how wonderful it was to be a kid. Maybe you should start now. You're welcome.

Best browser for Android 2015

What is the best browser for Android ? We compared the most popular to see which of them is best suited to your needs.
The browser is perhaps the most interesting app on our mobile device. We use it to read news, find information, play games, and download files. Along with messages, calls, and maps, we spend most of our time on our mobile devices using a browser. As a slow or inefficient browser negatively affects our experience, it’s important to choose one that boasts high performance and best meets our needs. But this is not an easy task.
There are hundreds of browsers for Android. Which is the best?
There are more Android browsers than ever before. All the big names have a browser on Google Play – all except for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. And while some have more than a 30% share of the market, others have been downloaded less than one million times. Through this comparison, we want to help you choose the browser that suits you. To do this, we applied the same philosophy as in our browser comparative for Windows, with tests focused on everyday use cases.

Nine browsers, nine different styles

For this test, we chose the most popular browsers on Google Play. Aside from the big names (ChromeFirefoxOpera, and Opera Mini), we also included some notable independent browsers: UC Browser, Dolphin, Puffin, CM, and Javelin, all of which use existing technology, but offer various different features and enhancements.

Chrome Browser: the one to beat

While Chrome may be Google’s official browser, it’s not always offered as the default on an Android device. Chrome's popularity is undeniable: it is in installed on almost all mobile phones and tablets, but only if you use Android 4.0 or higher. The highlight is the data synchronization between different devices running Chrome (if you are signed in).

Chrome has the (unfair?) advantage of being a Google product
Version analyzed: 41.0.2272
Compatible with: Android 4.0 or higher
Space occupied: 73 megabytes
Number of downloads on Google Play: 500.000.000 - 1.000.000.000

Opera and Opera Mini: the veteran contenders

Opera was one of the first browsers to appear on mobile devices, and this experience is demonstrated in the quality of its features. There are different versions for Android, but the latest is the redesigned Opera Mini. In this comparative, we analyze both the regular version and Mini, because they meet different needs.
After the latest update, Opera and Opera Mini look practically identical
Version analyzed: 28.0.1764 (normal) and 8.0.1807 (mini)
Compatible with: Android 4.0 or higher (normal) and Android 2.3 or higher (mini)
Space occupied: 24,9 megabytes (normal) and 12,8 megabytes (mini)
Number of downloads on Google Play: 50.000.000 - 100.000.000

Firefox Browser: the truly free choice

While the Mozilla browser may have only recently arrived on Android devices, it already has a lot of fans. It uses a different technologybase to other browsers (for better or for worse). With its extensions and tools, Firefox has all the necessary components to compete with Chrome and Opera.
If there is a browser that can compete against Chrome then it is Firefox
Version analyzed: 37.0.1
Compatible with: Android 2.3 or higher
Space occupied: 44,7 megabytes
Number of downloads on Google Play: 100.000.000 - 500.000.000

UC Browser: the most famous independent option

Outside the big names, the most downloaded browser for Android isUC Browser, which is available in different versions. Here we analyzed the standard version, which comes with unique features, such as a night reading mode and themes. It is one of the only browsers that supports Flash.
UC Browser is well designed and includes lots of tools
Version analyzed: 10.3.0
Compatible with: Android 2.2 or higher
Space occupied: 47,4 megabytes
Number of downloads on Google Play: 100.000.000 - 500.000.000

Dolphin Browser: what Chrome could have been (but isn’t)

Dolphin Classic, one of the first alternative browsers for Android, it is stable, attractive, and has a variety of plug-ins and customizable themes. If you install Dolphin Jetpack – which is entirely optional – you can enjoy playing games on the web in the highest quality possible.
Extensions, data synchronization, support for Flash... Dolphin has it all
Version analyzed: 11.4.4
Compatible with: Android 4.0 or higher
Space occupied: 43,6 megabytes
Number of downloads on Google Play: 50.000.000 - 100.000.000

Puffin Web Browser: for those addicted to Adobe Flash

Better known on iOS, where it is used as a method of running Flash,Puffin is a fast browser which has been optimized for open source web games. It even gives you the option to activate a virtual trackpad, as if you were using a laptop. The free version has ads that appear from time to time, but you can still use it with few limitations.
Puffin opens web pages in the same way as on a PC, including flash animations
Version analyzed: 4.1.4
Compatible with: Android 2.3 or higher
Space occupied: 24 megabytes
Number of downloads on Google Play: 5.000.000 - 10.000.000

CM Browser: the most secure Android browser

The developers of Clean Master have release their own browser, or rather their own version of Chrome, as the technology behind both is the same.CM Browser emphasizes safety and privacy when browsing: it scans downloads with its excellent integrated antivirus program, as well as blocking dangerous sites.
CM Browser's strength is its security, with its integrated antivirus program being one of the best around
Version analyzed: 5.1.80
Compatible with: Android 4.0 or higher
Space occupied: 7,2 megabytes
Number of downloads on Google Play: 50.000.000 - 100.000.000

Javelin Browser: the most promising and original

Javelin is a browser unlike any other. Softonic editor Sam chose it as his web browser of 2014 for its unconventional design and reading mode, something found in very few of its competitors. Using this browser is like entering a parallel universe.
Javelin is not like any other browser we tested
Version analyzed: 4.1.10
Compatible with: : Android 4.0 or higher
Space occupied: 16,5 megabytes
Number of downloads on Google Play: 100.000 - 500.000

Performance and memory consumption

How lightweight and powerful are the nine browsers in this comparison? We tested browsers on a Nexus 5 with Android 5.1 installed. Before starting the test, we restored the Nexus to its factory settings. We used versions from April 14 2015.
For the tests measuring memory consumption, we used the Android Apps Settings panel. The five tabs loaded as part of the test were Google.com, Yahoo! Weather, eBay, Reddit, and Softonic. The SunSpider and Browsermark benchmarks were carried out after deleting the browsing history, with the Nexus plugged in.
The best browser in terms of memory consumption is Opera Mini. The new version barely went above 100 MB, even with five tabs open. This was followed by UC and Firefox.Brining up the rear was Puffin, which by default opens the pages in PC version. The memory consumption of the browsers powered by the WebKit software engine(Chrome, Opera, Dolphin, and CM) is pretty similar.
The benchmark, on the other hand, yielded conflicting results, and some tests had to be repeated several times due to unexpected crashes (that was the case with both Dolphin and Puffin). We were unable to test Opera due to its compression technology, which prevented us carrying out the load tests.
The highest scorers are marked in dark Green (for Sunspider, lower is better. For Browsermark, higher is better)
As you can see in the table, browsers that use the WebKit engine, led by Chrome, took first place in the Browsermark benchmark. In the SunSpider test, Puffin took first place, followed by Firefox. When considering the four tests, the browsers with best performance and memory consumption were UC Browser, Firefox, and Opera.

What can they do?

How well each feature works is really important in a mobile browser. Do you read a lot? Then a reading mode (night or not) will come in handy. Do you visit pages using Flash? Not all browsers load this content. Each browser has its specialties, and some try to cover everything.
Dolphin Browser and UC are the two most comprehensive browsers in terms of features. Dolphin, in particular, provides everything you can find in a browser for Windows. They are followed by Firefox, the only major browser with support for extensions and themes. Chrome pales in comparison, with relatively limited features.

And the winners are ...

We had a long discussion about which browsers to choose as the winners of this comparison. In the end, we decided to reward the most complete and lightweight browsers. The overall winner is the one that had a good balance between the two. Thus, if your priority is a lightweight browser over a powerful one – or vice versa – then we have the perfect options for you.

The most complete: Dolphin Browser

Dolphin not only has everything you could ask for, but also offers elegant integration no matter what device you are using. As well as support for Flash, it also has impeccable data synchronization, lots of add ons, and a Web App Store. True, it doesn't have the best performance, but it's the best browser for powerful tablets (and games look great with the Jetpack mode).
Dophin Browser's HD version is ideal for next-gen tablets

The most lightweight: Opera Mini

Hundreds of millions of people surf the web with slow connections and under-powered mobile devices. Opera is the only company that has taken this into account. Opera Mini 8 has modern features, but is more lightweight and efficient when consuming data. Even if you don’t have access to high-speed internet, this browser is still impeccable.
The new Opera Mini 8 looks similar to its big brother, Opera Browser

The best of 2015: Firefox

We think Firefox is the best browser for Android at the moment for several reasons. Firstly, its integration with Firefox for desktop is excellent. And don’t forget that Firefox for desktop won the Windows browser comparison.
Of all the browsers we analyzed, Firefox had the best design with its clean interface familiar to those who use the browser for PC and Mac. It doesn't overdo it, nor does the design get too abstract.
As for performance, while Firefox does not stand out in the Browsermark test, it does in the Sunspider one. Firefox also has the third best memory consumption, second only to UC and Opera Mini.
Finally, Firefox is open source and, thus, independent. It is independent of large corporations (such as Google, Microsoft, and Apple) and it doesn't have any corporate sponsors (which is common in alternative browsers).
In short, if you want a solid and elegant alternative to Chrome, choose Firefox. Although don’t forget about Opera Mini and Dolphin, which both meet specific needs.
What browser for Android do you recommend?

It is your responsibility to take care of your body and body parts that can look stunningly beautiful and nice. Prevention is always better than cure. The following are some the measures and steps to develop your eyesight naturally at home.

Some eye exercises are

Pencil Push-Ups

Grab a pencil from your work table and make a mark or write an alphabet or a number on the middle of the pencil. You will only have to focus on the pencil and the mark you made on it to enhance your eyesight. Hold the pencil vertically at an arms distance and focus on the mark that you have made on it. Do not move to the next step until you completely focus on the mark. Now bring the pencil closer to your nose in a straight line, focusing on the same mark that you have made on the pencil. When the pencil comes closer to your eyes, you will need to focus on the mark accordingly and stop moving the pencil immediately when the pencil doubles. Give some rest for your eyes for a few seconds by closing your eyes or looking at something else. When you feel that your eyes are completely refreshed try focusing the mark again, if you see double pencil again, rest your eyes for a few seconds more. Now try focusing on the mark again and slowly move the pencil in a straight line to an arm’s distance. You can repeat this exercise again that can naturally increase your eyesight.  Spend 5-10 minutes for this small exercise daily and relax by hearing music, if you are a music lover.
You might have heard about “push-ups for great health”. Now let’s do some pencil push-ups for great eye-sights. Take a look at the below mentioned pointers:
  • Get a pencil and make a mark on it. Make sure that it’s marked in the middle. The mark can be anything – a number, an alphabet or just a dot.
  • In order to get started with your pencil push-ups, you need to move the pencil back and forth with all your focus on it and the mark you made on the same.
  • Hold the pencil vertically at an arm’s distance and focus on the mark that you have made on it. Do not move to the next step until you are able to focus on the mark, completely.
  • Now bring the pencil closer to your nose in a straight line, and keep focusing on the same mark.
  • With the pencil coming closer to your eyes, the latter will have to adjust accordingly, in order to maintain the level of focus.
  • Make sure to stop the pencil where it is the moment the pencil doubles. Give some rest to your eyes for a few seconds by closing your eyes or looking away.
  • Once you feel that your eyes are completely refreshed, try focusing on the mark all over If you see double pencil again, give rest to your eyes for a few seconds more.
  • Now try focusing on the mark again and slowly move the pencil in a straight line at an arm’s distance. Repeat the steps until you get rid of the double vision. Spend 5-10 minutes on this exercise daily. You can also play a soothing music in order to make the session more relaxing.
  • This exercise, when done on regular basis can help improve your eyesight to a great extent. It is also helpful for correcting crossed eyes and double vision. The best part – it’s pain-free and easy.

Eye rolling

When you are resting, try to go for this exercise. Look up and roll your eyes in the clockwise direction for 10 times. Then take a 2 minutes break and close your eyes. Then open them and start rolling them anti clockwise for 10 times. This will keep your eyes in better health.

Temple massage

Massage the temples with your thumb knuckles in clockwise and anti clockwise direction for 20 times. Ensure you massage in a circular motion for 25 times each side and then go for the nose bridge. The next point should be the middle of your forehead or the midpoint of your eyebrows. Massage these points for best results.

Warming of eyelids

Warm the hands by rubbing them against each other. They are warm now. Place the warm palm on your eyelids. Wait for 5 seconds and then remove them. Repeat this activity for 3 times.

Naps

Take naps whenever you are free of some important assignment. Close your eyes and tilt your head back. Relax muscles for just 3 minutes. This will rejuvenate your eyes.

Daily Food Diet

  • Your lifestyle and food you consume plays a great role in your eyesight. Consume food that has enough nutrients and vitamins for your eyes.
  • Green leafy vegetables, fish like salmon and tuna, citrus fruit juices like orange and lemon, fruits like banana and nuts can help you attain nutrients for your eyes.
  • Eat more food that has vitamin E, C and A. These foods can be carrots, kiwis, squash, cheese, milk, cantaloupe, spinach, cranberries, papaya, olive, wheat germ, vegetable oils and other similar foot items.
  • Antioxidants are good for your eyes too. These are often generated within your bodies and they can be the beta carotene, lutein or zeaxanthin. These help lowering macular degeneration from sun lights. The foods that are rich in these antioxidants are leafy vegetables, pepper, egg, sweet potato and pumpkin.
  • Grapes, blue berries and goji berries also improve vision as they contain flavonoids.
  • Foods that contain lecithin, cysteine and sulfur help preventing formation of cataract. Eat garlic, capers, onion and shallots for these benefits.
  • Drinking a lot of water keeps your body hydrated and prevents dry eyes.
  • Smoking can affect your eyesight and can cause cataracts, so try and avoid smoking.

Take care of your eyes and its environment

  • Always use sunglasses while you go out on a sunny day or while traveling to keep your eyes away from dust, dirt and sunrays.
  • Continuous usage of laptops, mobile, watching TV can also reduce the level of your eyesight, so always give a good break to your eyes by blinking them while using laptops or television or close your eyes for a few minutes and listen to some music to relax.
  • Safety wear is a must if you are working in a hazardous environment. Wear safety glasses or goggles when you are working. There are some sports like racquet ball, ice hockey and lacrosse that tend to injure the eye of the players. You must use helmets when you participate in these sports.
  • Adequate sleep will help you rest your eyes and your body too. Your eyes recover and repair themselves while you sleep.
  • While watching television or reading for a long time, give your eyes some rest or take a break. Cup the eyes after closing them. Let no light reach them for 10 minutes. This relaxation will help your sight. You can place some cucumber or ice cubes on your eyes when you are taking this break.
So try these remedies to improve your eye sight and always remember to keep your eyes safe.

Lifestyle and dietary changes

Your lifestyle and your food habits play an important role when it comes to improving your eyesight. Therefore, you should eat foods that are loaded with nutrients your eyes need. Try to include these food products in your diet:
  • Green leafy vegetables, like spinach, collards, kale, chard, etc are rich in vitamins and minerals. Carrots are also good for your eyes.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids are too good for your vision as well as overall health. Tuna and salmon are the best options. They are tasty, as well.
  • You should also include citrus fruit. You can consume them in the either way – raw fruit or juices. Grapefruit, limes, lemons, oranges are rich in citric acid.
  • If you are a vegan, then you can also have things like nuts, bananas and beans. They are loaded with proteins.
  • Taking vitamin supplements in also a great idea.
However, you cannot improve your vision with changing your diet only. Lifestyle changes are also needed. Here is how making alterations can help you:
  • Researches show that people who smoke are more prone to vision related disorders. Moreover, smoking might lead to the occurrence of macular degeneration and formation of cataracts in the later phase of your life. If you are not able to quit smoking, then you can seek assistance from a reliable support group or a medical professional.
  • Just like smoking, the above mentioned ophthalmic conditions can also occur due to overexposure to sunlight. So, you should wear sunglasses whenever you are out. Make sure your shades are UV-safe. Wrap-around shades are among the best options as they offer proper and maximum coverage.
  • You should try to reduce visual fatigue as much as possible. You can do this by turning down the brightness of your computer. Staring at something very bright for long can strain your eyes.
  • If your work involves writing or working on computers for long hours, then make sure to adjust the size of the text. Zooming in the text size will put less pressure on your eyes and prevent it from getting strained.
So, just following these simple tips you can improve your eyesight drastically. However, seeing a doctor at an interval of at least 3 months is highly advisable.

Top Ten Pictures that shocked the World

It has often been said throughout time that a picture is worth a thousand words. Any picture may be worth a thousand words, but only a few rare photos tell more than a thousand words. They tell a powerful story, a story poignant enough to change the world and galvanize each of us. Over and over again…
From the iconic images of Omayra Sanchez’s tragic death to the horrifying images of the Bhopal Gas disaster in 1984, the power of photography is still alive and invincible.
Here is my top 10 list of photos that shocked the world:
Warning: Be prepared for images of violence and death (in one  case, the photograph of a dead child) if you scroll down.

10. Kosovo Refugees (Carol Guzy)

Kosovo Refugees (Carol Guzy)
Carol Guzy, the first woman to receive a Pulitzer Prize for spot news photography, received her most recent Pulitzer in 2000 for her touching photographs of Kosovo refugees.
The above picture portrays Agim Shala, a two-year-old boy, who is passed through a fence made with barbed wire to his family. Thousands of Kosovo refugees were reunited and camped in Kukes, Albania.

9. War Underfoot (Carolyn Cole)

War Underfoot (Carolyn Cole)
Los Angeles Times photographer Carolyn Cole took this terrifying photo during her assignment in Liberia. It shows the devastating effects of the Liberian Civil War.
Bullet casings cover entirely a street in Monrovia. The Liberian capital was the worst affected region, because it was the scene of heavy fighting between government soldiers and rebel forces.

8. Thailand Massacre (Neil Ulevich)

Thailand Massacre (Neil Ulevich)
Neal Ulevich won the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for a “series of photographs of disorder and brutality in the streets of Bangkok, Thailand”  (Pulitzer.com).
The Thammasat University Massacre took place on October 6, 1976. It was a very violent attack on students who were demonstrating against Field Marshall Thanom Kittikachorn.
F. M. T. Kittikachorn was a dictator who was planning to come back to Thailand. The return of the military dictator from exile provoked very violent protests. Protestors and students were beaten, mutilated, shot, hung and burnt to death.

7. After the Storm (Patrick Farrell)

After the Storm (Patrick Farrell)
Miami Herald photographer Patrick Farrell captured the harrowing images of the victims of Haiti in 2008. Farrell documented the Haitian tragedy with impressive black-and-white stills. The subject of “After the Storm” is a boy who is trying to save a stroller after the tropical storm Hanna struck Haiti.

In 2006, Israeli authorities ordered the evacuation of illegal outposts, such as Amona. Oded Balilty, an Israeli photographer for the Associated Press, was present when the evacuation degenerated into violent and unprecedented clashes between settlers and police officers. The picture shows a brave woman rebelling against authorities.
Like many pictures on this list, “The Power of One” has been another subject of major controversy. Ynet Nili is the 16-year-old Jewish settler from the above picture. According to Ynet, “a picture like this one is a mark of disgrace for the state of Israel and is nothing to be proud of. The picture looks like it represents a work of art, but that isn’t what went on there. What happened in Amona was totally different.” Nili claims the police beat her up very harshly. “You see me in the photograph, one against many, but that is only an illusion – behind the many stands one man – (Prime Minister Ehud) Olmert, but behind me stand the Lord and the people of Israel.”

5. World Trade Center 9/11 (Steve Ludlum)

World Trade Center 9/11 (Steve Ludlum)
The power of Steve Ludlum’s photos are astounding, and the written description only tends to dilute the impact. The consequences of the second aircraft crashing into New York’s WTC were devastating: fireballs erupted and smoke billowed from the skyscrapers anticipating the towers’ collapse and monstrous dust clouds.

4. After the Tsunami (Arko Datta)

One of the most representative and striking photos of the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami was taken by Reuters photographer Arko Datta  in Tamil Nadu. He won the World Press Photo competition of 2004. Kathy Ryan, jury member and picture editor of  The New York Times Magazine, characterized Datta’s image as a “graphic, historical and starkly emotional picture.”
“After the Tsunami” illustrates an Indian woman lying on the sand with her arms outstretched, mourning a dead family member. Her relative was killed by one of the deadliest natural disasters that we have ever seen: the Indian Ocean tsunami.

Pablo Bartholomew is an acclaimed Indian photojournalist who captured the Bhopal Gas Tragedy into his lens. Twenty-six years have passed since India’s worst industrial catastrophe injured 558,125 people and killed as many as 15,000. Because safety standards and maintenance procedures had been ignored at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, a leak of methyl isocyanate  gas and other chemicals triggered a  massive environmental and human disaster. Photographer Pablo Bartholomew rushed to document the catastrophe. He came across a man who was burying a child. This scene was photographed by both Pablo Bartholomew and Raghu Rai, another renowned Indian photojournalist. “This expression was so moving and so powerful to tell the whole story of the tragedy”, said Raghu Rai.

Pulitzer Prize award winning photojournalist Deanne Fitzmaurice won the highly respected award in 2005 for the photographic essay “Operation Lion Heart.”
“Operation Lion Heart” is the story of a 9-year-old Iraqi boy who was severely injured by an explosion during one of the most violent conflicts of modern history – the Iraq War. The boy was brought to a hospital in Oakland, CA where he had to undergo dozens of life-and-death surgeries. His courage and unwillingness to die gave him the nickname: Saleh Khalaf, “Lion Heart”.
Deanne Fitzmaurice’s shocking photographs ran in the San Francisco Chronicle in a five-part series written by Meredith May.

1. Tragedy of Omayra Sanchez (Frank Fourier)

Frank Fournier captured the tragic image of Omayra Sanchez trapped in mud and collapsed buildings. The eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia 1985 triggered a massive mudslide. It devastated towns and killed 25,000 people.
After 3 days of struggling, Omayra died due to hypothermia and gangrene. Her tragic death accentuated the failure of officials to respond quickly and save the victims of Colombia’s worst ever natural disaster. Frank Fournier took this photo shortly before Omayra died. Her agonizing death was followed live on TV by hundreds of millions of people around the world and started a major controversy. May her soul rest in peace…
